The 2021 Budget attempts to reinforce fiscal consolidation without raising taxes, but key uncertainty remains whether Government will obtain agreement from public sector unions for negligible nominal wage increases.

About JP Landman:

JP Landman is a self-employed political and trend analyst. His focus areas are trends in politics, economics, social capital and the interplay of demographics and economic growth. JP is a popular speaker and enjoys consistently good ratings.

He has a BA and LLB degrees from Stellenbosch (1978), studied Economics at Harvard (1998 and 2005), and obtained an MPhil in Future Studies (cum laude) from Stellenbosch (2003). In 2009 he completed a course at Oxford University on the economies of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India & China).

He is a visiting professor at the University of the Free State where he lectures on trends in South Africa's political-economy.

SALCOC Webinar

This webinar was held on Wednesday 3rd March 2021 and moderated by Dr Azar Jammine: Chief Economist at Econometrix and Board Chair of SALCOC. It was a privilege for the Chamber (SALCOC) to host the calibre of speakers of Dr Martin Lebos: Specialist Surgeon and Dr Stavros Nicolaou: Group Senior Executive, Aspen Pharmaceuticals.

The session was well received.

Information on the logistics of the Covid-19 vaccine (acquisition and distribution) were covered, as were the challenges in the South African environment. Also the benefits of the vaccine regarding herd immunity, the risk categories for distribution, the fact that Covid-19 is here to stay for a while and that people need to continue to adhere to the sanitisation, social distancing and mask wearing as part of the solution. Conspiracies and myths of the virus were put to rest.
